The Russian River Fire Protection District is a combination paid /volunteer organization providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services to approximately 18 square miles along Sonoma County’s beautiful Russian River. A five member board governs the fire district which is home to world-renowned Korbel Winery and Vineyards and Northern California’s Armstrong Redwoods State Park. The District lies approximately 70 miles north of the city of San Francisco and lies between Santa Rosa and the Pacific Ocean.
Fire District staff includes nine full time employees and a shared Fire Chief and a shared Administrative Assistant. One Battalion Chief (retiring), two Captains, three Engineer/EMT’s, and three Firefighter/Paramedics form three shifts with 3/0 staffing. Volunteers and Firefighter Interns augment the staffing. The District has one station which is staffed 24/7/365. A second station located in Rio Nido is housing for reserve engines, a community post office and a meeting room.
The District has a full time population of approximately 5,000 residents with an additional 10,000 seasonal visitors.
The call volume averages 1500 calls per year. Over 80% of the call volume is medically related. In addition to emergency services, the District provides education and training to the community and actively conducts and participates in Fire Prevention and Public Education.
To Our Community:
In our post 9/11 complex world, with no volunteers and only three firefighters per shift, public safety is at risk when a second call comes in – either medical or fire. The single person left at the station cannot do anything but call for help from neighboring fire districts, if available. We need to increase the fire tax for the first time since 1980 to prevent further erosion of our level of service.
We still need your help, but this economy is making it difficult to maintain the status quo.
We ask that you try to attend our monthly Board meetings which are returning to the third Tuesday of each month beginning at 7 pm.
We hope to see you here.
Your Opinion Counts.
